Time nearly stood still in the sea

Julius von Bismarck has two related pieces of work, both about the sea, now showing at Hamburg's Kunsthalle.  Hoch Und Runter is the installation of a dilapidated boat swinging very slowly back and forth - so slow that you can barely see it move:




Another piece by von Bismarck is Den Himmel Muss Man Sich Wegdenken.  It is a film showing, again in slow motion, the rise and fall of waves in a storm-tossed ocean:





Time seems to have infinitely dilated in both of von Bismarck's works.  Here, we are reminded of our helpless mortality under the merciless overwhelming force of nature.
