Piazzas of nostalgia and melancholy

Metaphysical town squares

I'm a big fan of Giorgio de Chirico's Metaphysical Town Square series of paintings from the 1910s.  Mostly uninhabited architectural spaces with long deep shadows and much emphasized perspectives, they are full of haunting isolation and melancholy.
