Pica's communication

Amalia Pica's solo exhibition previously at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) addressed issues of communication through various installations, often in optimistic fiesta colours.

Wielandstr.18, 12159 Berlin

I'm visiting Chicago for a few days.  Since the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) is opened till late on Tuesdays, I decided to make it my first stop as soon as I got off the plane yesterday afternoon.  Do Ho Suh's installation Wielandstr.18, 12159 Berlin, a full-scale replica in translucent cloth of the corridor of an apartment building he used to live in, is just as intimate and powerful as his other works I have seen before.

Ambiente Bianco

I was ecstatic to find Lucio Fontana's Ambiente Bianco when I visited Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art in 2009.  Fontana, best known for his slashed monochromatic canvases, believed that an image should not be confined to two dimensions.  His attempt to transform the painted surface to a three-dimensional spatial experience culminated in the creation of this work.  Walking into this totally white room is like immersing yourself into his white slashed canvas.  Ethereal is the word to describe it.

Gillick vs Judd

I just missed Liam Gillick's mid-career retrospective Three Perspectives and a Short Scenario when I visited Rotterdam's Witte de With in 2008.  So when I learnt that the exhibition was travelling to Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art in 2009, I decided that I must go to Chicago for a weekend.  Gillick's bright-coloured architectural structures dominated the show.  It was my first time seeing his works in real life.  My weekend was well spent.

If I were to curate a show, I would let Gillick's works converse with the great Donald Judd's.  Judd at K20, Duesseldorf 2010:
