Quartier Schützenstrasse

Just a few blocks north and east of his Südliche Friedrichstadt housing complex is another project by Aldo Rossi.  Occupying an entire block bounded by Schützenstrasse, Markgrafenstrasse, Zimmerstrasse and Charlottenstrasse in central Berlin, the 1998 Quartier Schützenstrasse is unmistakably postmodern Rossi's:

Although I have passed by this landmark by Aldo Rossi many times during my regular visits to Berlin, this is only my first time taking pictures of it when I visited Berlin this July and August.  Typically postmodern Rossi style, the 1981 Südliche Friedrichstadt housing complex is part of the Internationale Bauaustellung (IBA):

James Stirling's 1988 Wissenschaftszentrum, Berlin:

Without making an appointment in advance, I was pleasantly surprised to be allowed to get in (there's access control at the entrance) and take pictures of James Stirling's postmodern 1988 Wissenschaftszentrum (WZB) when I visited Berlin last summer.

The site plan of Stirling's addition to the WZB consists of four architectural prototypic forms - amphitheater, campanile, stoa and basilica - surrounding a central garden, which cannot be seen from the outside.

Frankfurt's Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle

First day of my German trip ...

Arrived at Frankfurt in the afternoon, tired.  Didn't get to see much today.  Just walked around the pedestrianized area near the Dom and the Römer.  There are a couple of art museums around here that I'd like to visit but apparently didn't have enough time to go in today.  The architecture of both museums is not necessarily my type but quite interesting.

Botta in architecture wonderland

I remember visiting Basel Switzerland four years ago.  I remember telling myself that I must visit this architecture wonderland again as soon as I left last time.  So here I am.  Just like four years ago, I was greeted today by Mario Botta's postmodern architectural icon, the 1995 Bank für Internationalen Zahlungsausgleich, right in downtown Basel when I was on my way to the hostel.
