X + Y + Z = XYZ

Since I have been sick the past few days and missed a math conference, the math worm in me wants me to write something mathematical today.

I came across an article lately, which has continued to amaze me.  The simple equation

X + Y + Z = XYZ

has many solutions such as (X,Y,Z) = (1,2,3) or  (0,√3,-√3,).  But to find ALL real solutions, trigonometry surprisingly gives a perfect answer.  All we need is the identity

Consider any solution (X,Y,Z).  Since the range of the tangent function is the set of all real numbers, we can always find real numbers A, B and C such that

X = tan A, Y = tan B and Z = tan C.

So the equation

X + Y + Z = XYZ

is equivalent to

tan A + tan B + tan C = tan A tan B tan C,

which is equivalent to

tan (A + B + C) = 0,

yielding the solutions

A + B + C = nπ

for any integer n.

Caesar's Palace Blues

The video is horrible but the sound is excellent.  Eddie Jobson's electric violin performance is out of this world.  From U.K.'s 1979 live album Night After Night:

Tillmans's abstract photography 2

I first saw Wolfgang Tillmans at his K21 solo exhibition in Düsseldorf 2013.  I am particularly drawn to his abstract works:

Printing Press As You Go Along

I went to see Wolfgang Tillmans at the International Artists Series presented by Canadian Art last night.  A lot of still and moving images were shared together with Tillmans's inspirational talk.  The Printing Press/Eclipse video features the sound of the printing machine and a 3-minute scene of a total solar eclipse, informing of the artist's love of dance music and astronomy.  Eclipse is not available online but shots of Printing Press were used in Tillmans's video for his music debut Make It Up As You Go Along earlier this year.  Not really a big fan of dance music, I certainly enjoy the visual more than the audio:
