I was lucky enough to catch Carsten Nicolai's solo exhibition Formula yesterday on its last day at Galerie EIGEN+ART, Berlin.  His practice of visual art informed by mathematics is, of course, closely related to what I do.  Excellent show!

White Line Light

Carsten Nicolai and Olaf Bender’s light/sound installation White Line Light at Strachan Avenue Old Police Station from Toronto’s 2007 Nuit Blanche is still one of my best NB experiences.  (Sad that it's been all going downhill now year after year.)  Sorry I couldn't find a good clip of the Toronto installation online.  Here's a later iteration in the Hague:

System And Sensuality

Probably not a priority for most, System Und Sinnlichkeit - an exhibition of contemporary drawings - at Kupferstichkabinett Berlin is particularly appealing to me since that's exactly what I have been practising.  The non-figurative minimalist and sometimes mathematical works on view, including my favourite multi-talented Carsten Nicolai, are truly inspiring.

I was looking for Alva Noto's music videos on youtube when I came across this blog.  The blog k_sixsix is full of brilliant videos lending vision to my favourite electronic sound by artists like Ryoji Ikeda, Alva Noto and Atom™.  Here's one from Atom™:

Observatory

Since I missed his show in Montreal last year, one of the shows I was very much looking forward to seeing during my London trip this time was Carsten Nicolai's solo exhibition Observatory at Ibid.  Exploring  different kinds of particle phenomena, from microscopic to macroscopic, Nicolai's minimalist installations are elegant expressions of the aesthetics of physical science.

The installation Particle Noise uses an analog and a digital Geiger counter to capture radioactive particles and magnetic noise.  The pure minimalist cosmic sound produced is the most beautiful noise I have ever heard.  Too bad I can't show it here :(  The installation is aptly complemented by Traces, a series of photographs which document traces of cosmic and terrestrial radiation.

The installation Thermic makes visible the heat wave produced by a metal heating system with a light source throwing shadows of heated air on to a wall behind it.  A subtle but clever piece!

This man is right at the top of my must-see list.  Carsten Nicolai (aka Alva Noto) is big in Germany, especially in Berlin, where he lives and works.  He was one of the key participants at the BIAN (la Biennale Internationale d’Art Numérique) in Montreal a couple months ago.  Too bad I couldn't make it there when he was so close to home.
