Creative Type Five is the fifth annual typographic showcase featuring artists, illustrators and graphic designers from Toronto and beyond. I ran into this show when I was gallery hopping this past weekend. A couple of pieces caught my eye ...

Out on the street, though not part of the show, definitely one creative type:

Trockel, Scott and yarn bombing
What do Rosemarie Trockel, Judith Scott and yarn bombing have in common? They do share a common thread ...
I walked into Trockel's exhibition A Cosmos at New York's New Museum the previous week, not expecting much. The result was my fascination about the documentation of Trockel's whole spectrum of creative works over the decades. One particular body of works that interested me was her knitted "paintings" in wool. They were aptly supplemented by Scott's knitted sculptures. Photography was not allowed at New Museum but I can show you Trockel's work I saw this summer.
Trockel at Museum Ludwig, Köln 2012:
Also seen this summer was some yarn bombing when I was travelling. Yarn bombing is considered a form of graffiti using colourful yarn instead of paint or chalk. A tree and some architectural elements shown here have been yarn bombed in Kassel:

Schoultz's trees of chaos and destruction
Cooper Cole Gallery's current exhibition Destroyer features two artists from San Francisco - Andrew Schoultz and Richard Colman. Exploring historical, political and environmental themes, Schoultz's works are full of symbolism. His images are often associated with chaos and destruction.
Schoultz at Cooper Cole, Toronto 2012:
Schoultz's style and imagery are easily recognizable. Here's a mural by Schoultz I recently found in Toronto's West End:

Pop + minimalism + vorticism + futurism + graffiti art = ?
Newspeak British Art Now at Saatchi Gallery is another good show to see the most current British art. The first installment of the show was shown last summer and fall; the second installment is still on, through spring. I first saw Jaime Gili's works when I went to see the show last December. His works were said to be a mix of pop, minimalism, vorticism, futurism and graffiti art. I don't really care about the labels. It is the geometry that captures me.
