Browsing

I decided to stay away from the Nuit Blanche crowd this year.  But that doesn't mean I would have to miss everything.  I went early to see my favourite artist Kelly Jazvac's installation Browsing before heading home.

Flop

Kelly Jazvac's Flop series was produced during her residency at London's SPACE from 2008 to 2009.  I've been looking, with no success, for the artist's book documenting her residency.  Thanks to the generosity of the staff at SPACE, they found me one copy when I visited them in March last year.

Park

Although Oakville is just 40 minutes by train from Toronto, it's only my first time going there.  My visit is all because of Kelly Jazvac's solo exhibition Park, which was housed in a historic residential manor within a suburban garden.  Jazvac has continued working with discarded adhesive vinyl, juxtaposing its shiny artificiality with the pristine natural beauty of the garden setting.

Impel With Puffs: Kelly vs Kelly

Diaz Contemporary's new show Impel With Puffs presents a dialogue between sculptor Kelly Jazvac and photographer Kelly Wood.  I've been waiting for Jazvac's new show since 2010.  So when I heard about this show, I went there as soon as it's opened.  Using advertising materials, found imagery and short-lived consumer goods, Jazvac's sculptural installations, objects and collages in plastic at the exhibition have continued to draw inspirations from consumerism.  She considers Kelly Wood’s Continuous Garbage Project 1998-2003 to be an important influence on her own practice.  Wood's photographs at the exhibition consist of images of air pollution in Ontario.
