Wallace transmission

Ryan Wallace is hosting the other half of the Cooper Cole Gallery two-artist show Transmission Lines.  Rich in texture, his mixed media Polemic series from the last couple years, in his own words, embraces "ambiguity with a simultaneous sense of assembly and disintegration".

Duncan transmission

Chris Duncan is hosting half of the two-artist show Transmission Lines at Cooper Cole Gallery.  His crayon on paper Rubbing series and his World Wide Web in strapping tape play tricks to visual perception.

Baldessari moments

There's never a dull moment in John Baldessari's narrative works of found photography and appropriated images.

X by Y

Daniel Rozin's interactive digital work X by Y could be an everchanging architectural façade.  It was part of the group show Rethinking Art & Machine at THEMUSEUM when I visited Kitchener last time.

Paterson's land of the impossible

Les Paterson created the land of the impossible by rearranging maps of Ontario in his series of map collages.  I probably won't need one of those when I'm driving back to Toronto later today.

The four-square theorem

Another math day, while in Kitchener ...

In 1770, Lagrange proved that any prime number p can be written as a sum of four (integer) squares:

By making use of this fact and Euler's previous discovery (see this previous post of mine) that the product of sums of four squares can be written as a sum of four squares, Lagrange has now proved that every positive integer can be written as a sum of four squares.  For example,

2012 = 44^2 +6^2 +6^2 +2^2

Wunderbar

My favourite artist Jürgen Paas' latest solo exhibition Wunderbar is opening at Düsseldorf's Galerie Bernd A Lausberg this Friday.  Since I won't be able to travel to Germany any time before summer, I can only get a sneak peak of his latest works here at Toronto's Lausberg Contemporary.  I hope his show will travel to Toronto some time soon in future.

Products of sums of squares

I decided to do some math today.  Some interesting results about products of sums of (integer) squares ...

It can be proved easily using complex numbers that the product of sums of two squares is a sum of two squares:

Euler noted in 1743 that the product of sums of four squares is a sum of four squares:

This fact can be proved using quaternions, a generalization of complex numbers to four dimensions.   A corresponding result holds for sums of eight squares.   It is worth mentioning that no similar results exist for 16 squares or any number of squares other than 1, 2, 4 and 8.

Lachance's refracted light

I was delighted to see Michel Pierre Lachance's earlier works from his Incidences series at Lausberg Contemporary again this past weekend.  His fluorescent-hued paintings were inspired by the passage of light undergoing refractions.

Temple and Pinnacle

Joy Charbonneau's Felt Mountaintops is her contribution to Associates - New Design 2012 Collections at Cooper Cole Gallery (formerly known as Show & Tell Gallery).  Two neighbouring mountains in Banff National Park, Mount Temple and Mount Pinnacle, were represented using industrial felt.

Monroe perspectives (distorted)

Ian Monroe's exaggerated perspectives were inadvertently distorted when I was trying to take pictures of his works - a nice surprise:
